Fourteen remastered albums by The Beatles will be released tomorrow.
Here is an overview of each one…

Please Please Me “ah, one two, three, farrrr …” counts Paul McCartney as the band open their first album with I Saw Her Standing There in 1963. Much of the album was recorded in one day and it was largely the live act of the time. Twist And Shout was left to the end of the session because of the throat-shredding effect it had on Lennon’s voice. It featured the famed cover shot of the band looking down from a balcony at EMI’s Manchester Square offices in London (recreated in 1969).

With The Beatles
Recorded just four months after their debut and featuring George Harrison’s first composition (Don’t Bother Me), With The Beatles contained six covers and standards, like its predecessor. Included is the track I Wanna Be Your Man, which Lennon and McCartney first wrote and donated to the Rolling Stones.

A Hard Day’s Night
The first album written entirely by Lennon and McCartney and featuring 12-string guitars and acoustics to enrich the sound. Written as the soundtrack to a Dick Lester-directed film of the same name, with the title coming from a “Ringo-ism”.

Beatles For Sale
By now the band’s lives were increasingly hectic, with touring, filming, travelling and recording – and such was the pressure that work began on this album just six days after the final session for A Hard Day’s Night. As such, the band were again relying on a number of covers with Carl Perkins and Buddy Holly tracks included. They were as worn out as they look on the Hyde Park cover shot.

Help!
Soundtrack to the second Beatles film with seven of the tracks used in the completed caper. Among the notable tracks are Ticket To Ride and You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away, as well as Yesterday which featured only one Beatle, Paul McCartney, plus a string quartet. Although the cover concept was to spell HELP in semaphore, it was thought the arm positions did not look good enough so the album actually spells NUJV.

Rubber Soul
The album which many see as the beginning of the ‘interesting Beatles’, as the band play with new sounds. Norwegian Wood saw George Harrison tinkering with a sitar, while If I Needed Someone features a Byrds-y jangle and was one of a number of tracks with a country-rock feel. The cover also shows how the band were embracing psychedelia with the bubble writing and stretched photo giving a mind-expanding feel.

Revolver
Often seen as a contender for the band’s greatest album. After a much-needed break from constant demands, The Beatles were in full experimental flow. Song structures were becoming stranger and stranger, nowhere more so than on Tomorrow Never Knows with its thudding rhythm, backwards tape effects and total disregard for the verse-chorus approach. She Said She Said was based on an LSD trip the band took with actor Peter Fonda. Elsewhere, opening track Taxman was George Harrison’s response to the band finding themselves in the ‘supertax’ bracket.

Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Probably the defining album of 1967, recorded after the band had quit touring and had begun their ‘studio years’. With a lavish cover masterminded by pop artist Peter Blake, for which he was only ever paid about £200, the band had a loose concept about the titular group although this is not reflected in many of the songs. The band spent more than four months in Abbey Road working on the tracks, ranging from the touching She’s Leaving Home to Harrison’s sitar-drenched Within You Without You. The highpoint is A Day In The Life – essentially a Lennon song welded to a McCartney song with an incredible George Martin-scored orchestral build – and with one of the most famous final chords of all time.

Magical Mystery Tour
Originally a two-disc EP to accompany a BBC Christmas special, with just six songs, about a bus adventure with a nod to Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters; it was later expanded to an album in 1976 with added tracks from the same period which were not on albums, such as Hello Goodbye, Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane. Lennon’s Lear-inspired nonsense song I Am The Walrus later became a live fixture at Oasis’s gigs.

The Beatles
commonly referred to as ‘The White Album’ due to the plain sleeve, the album captures not only a prolific period of song-writing as the band decamped to Rishikesh, India, but also a troubled few months as tensions within the band boiled over. Ringo Starr quit for a while leaving Paul to drum on some tracks including Back In The USSR. Across a double album, it contains the broadest stylistic range of any Beatles recording including the proto-heavy metal of Helter Skelter and pastiches such as Piggies and sound collage of Revolution 9. While My Guitar Gently Weeps also broke new ground by introducing a featured soloist on to their recordings with Eric Clapton playing lead guitar.

Yellow SubmarineAnother soundtrack, this time to the animated movie which, although nominally starring the band, was voiced by actors (including former Coronation Street actor Geoffrey Hughes). Some songs had been released before including the title track, while others such as Only A Northern Song and Hey Bulldog were heard for the first time. The album’s second side was an orchestral score composed by producer George Martin.

Abbey Road
The last album recorded by the band, but due to the band’s release schedule, not the last to be issued. Contains Harrison’s masterful love song Something, as well as one of the least popular Beatles songs Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. The second side contains a 16-minute medley of song fragments which were pieced together culminating with The End, which was prophetically the last song recorded by all four Beatles. The famed cover features the band walking across the zebra crossing outside the Abbey Road studios.

Let It Be
After the squabbles and brief departures of The White Album, The Beatles wanted to make a back-to-basics album, Get Back, where they would rehearse and record together in early 1969. But creative tensions meant the original plan was abandoned and they moved from Twickenham Studios to their own Apple studios to finish recordings. Scheduling conflicts pushed the release into 1970 and the tapes were then given to producer Phil Spector to finish. The album did not appear until May 1970, by which point the band had split. It included One After 909, a song which had been kicking around since the early 1960s, as well as two of McCartney’s most anthemic tracks Let It Be and The Long And Winding Road (although he was never happy with the over-indulgent treatment Spector gave them and erased the producer’s efforts for a new version Let It Be … Naked in 2003).

Past Masters
A compilation of the band’s singles (a-sides and b-sides) and alternate version which had not already been featured on albums, put together to allow fans to have an overview of almost the entire Beatles’ catalogue. The new CD version is a double album bringing together the albums which were previously released in two volumes.

Grime artist Tinchy Stryder has topped the charts this year with singles Never Leave You and the aptly-titled Number One.
The songs, collaborations with Amelle Berrabah of the Sugababes and N-Dubz, feature on his debut album Catch 22 – which reached No 2 in the charts.
Real name Kwasi Danquah, the 22-year-old hails from East London.

DOES THE ALBUM CATER FOR DIFFERENT MOODS?
I didn’t really structure them with that in mind, but what I was going through at the time. There are downtempo tunes and then the ones which are going to get you hyped up, so there’s a nice mix on there.
YOU PERFORMED AT THE LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM FESTIVAL THIS YEAR – IS IT AN ISSUE CLOSE TO YOUR HEART?
Yeah, they reached out to me and explained exactly what the organisation’s about. Anything I believe in and can be a part of – I’m down for that, man. I’m not really into politics but when I heard the BNP had won some seats, it highlighted that racism is something that needs to be blocked out. The great thing about music is that everyone understands it – it’s the universal language.
DO YOU STILL LIVE IN EAST LONDON?
Yeah, I still live in East London. When I was growing up in Bow, the main thing everyone wanted to do was music. There are a lot of people making good music from a young age. There are some things that go on which are not quite so positive, but you get that in every area. In Bow a lot of people stuck together so there weren’t a lot of enemies growing up, which helped make it feel like a community.
DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A MUSICIAN?
No, initially I wanted to be a footballer and that was my main thing. I used to play for the Wimbledon youth team and Leyton Orient. Now I support Manchester United – I know it’s strange coming from East London.

YOU’VE BEEN LABELLED A GRIME ARTIST. ARE YOU WORRIED THE GENRE MIGHT BE A FLASH IN THE PAN LIKE UK GARAGE WAS?
I think that it might be a concern if you’re the type of artist who can only make grime. Old-school garage evolved into grime. No actual artists from the scene named it grime. It just got labelled. I wouldn’t say I’m concerned because that’s just where I’ve come from, it’s just something that’s a part of me. I don’t feel like it’s the only type of music I can make, so I’m feeling comfortable.
YOU’RE ALSO A MEMBER OF THE GROUP THE RUFF SQWAD AREN’T YOU?
Yeah, we all grew up together and it all just started in my bedroom, really. We were just making tapes. Because we were friends before the music, we can work well together. A couple of the members are producers on my record, too. We’ve always had a different sound to the rest out there on the scene. We are unique. At times our focus will shift onto different things, but we’ll always come back and do projects together.
DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT YOUR MUSIC SENDS OUT A POSITIVE MESSAGE?
Some people may choose to become role models, but I didn’t. It’s new to me – I’m still becoming aware of the fact that a lot of people might listen to my music. At the same time, though, I’ve got to be real and talk about the things which are going on around me. I think you can’t really hold back on the things that are coming from your heart.
PEOPLE ASSOCIATE GRIME WITH GUN/KNIFE CRIME – IS IT A LAZY COMPARISON?
I think so. Knife crime runs much deeper than any music people listen to. You can watch a film and see more violence than what you will hear on a grime track, so people use music as an excuse.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE?
My first choice, I have to say, is hip-hop. But I’m open-minded and into different types of music. Especially now – I hear so many things. I think I listen to music differently now and understand music better, but my first love is hip-hop because that’s what I grew up on. I do like some British hip-hop but I came up on Biggie and Jay Z.
DO YOU HAVE ANY GUILTY PLEASURES?
To tell you the truth, I actually haven’t. There’s nothing I can think of.
DOES THAT MEAN YOU’RE VERY COOL OR JUST TOO ASHAMED TO MENTION THEM?
Ha ha! I am ridiculously cool! When I was younger I’d like Spice Girls and things like that, but then everyone did so I’m not ashamed. Now pop music is credible again anyway, so I’m still a winner!
And it’s true: Noel has just released this statement on his official website:
“It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.
“Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan.”

I can’t help feeling sad that one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen is no more… Thanks lads, one of the finest bands to come out of the 90s… here’s a few of my favourites from over the years…

It’s been quite the week for Oasis rumours, with sources claiming the Gallaghers are to quit, and even suggested inter-band feuding was the real reason Oasis cancelled their V Festival headline slot at the weekend.
“V Festival was always scheduled as the last UK gig for this ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ world tour,” their press statement reads. “Oasis will complete the rest of the world tour in Europe and then take some well-earned time off before they begin to think about the next album and tour.”
On August 24 Liam posted on Twitter that he was sorry for pulling out of the festival, and also denied his band were no longer together.
But, tonight it seems things have taken a turn for the worse…

Alam McGee posted on facebook: “just got phoned by somebody at rock de seine that oasis have just split up an hour ago and manager or tour manager made the announcement to 50,000 fans/ madness are now playing 2 sets as they played already at festival.”

Singer Amy MacDonalds twitter account said:

1. I’m gutted feel so bad for all their fans!
2. Oasis cancelled again with one minute to stage time!!!
Liam smashes noels guitar, huuuge fight!

Is it true? Only time will tell, it seems.

In the meantime, I’m going to sneak in this fantastic video of Noel singing Talk Tonight. Bliss…

In the next in our series of guest columns, Rory Taylor gives his views on the Liverpool music scene…

In a world where digital technology reigns supreme, there is a concern that the live music scene will be irrevocably damaged or even die out.

There are those who have suggested that the notion of going to see a live gig would soon seem as quaint and arcane as morris dancing, thanks to the advent of MP3 and peer-to-peer file-sharing. Why would the music fan spend their evening sweating, being shoved about and having beer spilled over them by a Bill Bailey lookalike, when they could log on to the internet and enjoy their favourite band from the comfort of their own home?

And why would bands or artists have to slog around squalid venues in the desperate hope that an A&R man (or woman) might be in the audience that night, when they could simply post their music on to their MYSPACE page and wait for the offers to come flooding in?

This school of thought may apply to some cities, but couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to the city of Liverpool.

Liverpool has always had a vibrant and exciting live music scene, one which can’t be matched by any other city. There are a vast number of local bands and artists who are keen to showcase their music to as many people as they can, and there are more and more venues fulfilling their needs.

Once such venue is the Pilgrim, which is located just off Hardman Street. An unpretentious and unassuming pub, the Pilgrim holds free gig nights every Wednesday and Friday, showcasing all genres of music from indie and punk to heavy metal and reggae.

The nights are run by Rash Records, a not-for-profit record label, which offers local musicians gig time, promotion and legal advice from in-house music lawyers. This is at no cost to the musician and is done because Rash is passionate about promoting grassroots.

They are currently working with The Silk Pigs, arguably the best live band and hardest working in the North West. The band has joined Rash Records on a non-contractual basis. The relationship is built on trust, confidence and the mutual love for live music. The Pigs play all over the country and have secured residencies at 4 popular venues, including Powers Bar in London. You could check out their music at www.thesilkpigs.com, but to experience their raw energy, catchy melodies and passionate lyrics, you have to see them live.

Long live the LIVE music scene!

In this age of digital music, file sharing, downloading etc, coupled with the inescapable fact that the recession is biting all businesses, we are gradually seeing more and more record shops sadly disappear, from local independent stores to major music outlets. For those of us that remember the excitement of awaiting a release and queueing up to buy it with a bunch of other like-minded folk, this is a pretty sad state of affairs.

With their upcoming album release ‘Ignore The Ignorant’ – Sunday 6th September, The Cribs are hoping they can incentivise people to go out and show support for their local record shops once again.

In a move that is somewhat novel and one that hasn’t been done before, The Cribs will be releasing a special, exclusive regional version of the album, which will only be made available to record shops in the localities of the 4 band members, namely Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Portland, Oregon (USA).

This special version of the album aka the ‘Roses Edition’, will include the ‘Ignore The Ignorant’ album in special packaging, as well as a full 20 song live CD – ‘Live at The Ritz’ – recorded at Manchester’s Ritz during the band’s two night stand there last February, AND a DVD featuring ‘Secrets Saved: A Visual Record’ – a 45 minute documentary on the making of the album directed by Patrick Stanton (‘Leave Too Neat’, ‘Live at the Brudenell Social Club’) and Ryan Jarman’s 30 minute silent movie ‘The Serpent and the Peach’…….all for the price of a regular CD album!!!

As previously reported this version of the album will ONLY be available from record shops in Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Portland…so support these local stores and buy the ‘Roses Edition’ (plus, it’s a pretty good deal..)

Don’t worry if you live outside these areas, you can also order them from these good independent northern stores

Yorkshire – www.normanrecords.com

Lancashire – www.townsend-records.co.uk

Portland – www.jackpotrecords.com

Forty years ago next month, an album was released that changed the world. Abbey Road was the last album ever recorded by The Beatles, but it was a body of work that inspired a whole generation of musicians, and one that sounds as fresh today as when it was recorded.
Abbey Road is at the centre of this year’s Mathew Street supplement, but there’s also a whole load more too – on The Beatles, on their legacy and on what to do in Liverpool if you’re coming to the festival this year…

As well as a four page track-by-track guide to 40 years of Abbey Road, our annual guide to all things Beatles-related has special features on:

The Mendips minibus: Bob Dylan in John Lennon’s house

White Feather: The Spirit of Lennon exhibition

For the Love of George – the George Harrison tribute at St George’s Hall

Nowhere Boy: The teenage years that shaped John Lennon are the inspiration for this new film

The new Fab4D Experience at the Beatles Story

Plus, there’s full Mathew Street Festival and fringe listings, the Beatles in the news round up and a fantastic bumper Beatle quiz. And it’s only £1, in all good newsagents now…
